Temperament
Caiques are famous for surface-hopping, wrestling with toys, and rolling on their backs in a way that alarms first-time owners. Energy is the defining trait, and a caique without an outlet for it becomes destructive quickly. They are also notably nippy, generally through overexcitement rather than aggression, and benefit from early bite-pressure training.
Care
Enrichment volume matters more than enclosure size here. Expect to rotate toys constantly and to provide foraging opportunities throughout the day. They are poor talkers but strong whistlers and enthusiastic about learning tricks, which makes trick training an efficient way to spend their energy.
Notes
Often kept alongside the White-bellied Caique, Pionites leucogaster, whose range lies south of the Amazon. Temperament and care are effectively identical between the two.
